Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
