Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
